“We need thousands of more couples serving in the missions of the Church. Every mission president pleads for them. They…can leave the grandchildren. Those little darlings will be just fine, and I promise you will do things for them in the service of the Lord that, worlds without end, you could never do if you stayed home to hover over them. What greater gift could grandparents give their posterity than to say by deed as well as word, “In this family we serve missions!”

Mosques and construction.

MONEY IN KOSOVO

Kosovo uses the Euro  which is all of what Europe uses..It is a step up from the Lek in Albania.

..$2  E (dollar), a $1 E (dollar)  $.50 cents,   .20 cents, 10 cents, 5 cents and 2 cents, 1 cent...pretty tiny...  Every time we pay for something  and it comes to something and 4 cents or any cents   we scramble to get the right change and they say 'its all right"  they don't want the pennies...no one wants them !!!

Hey  we  got two pennies with our change today....no wonder they don't want them..they are so so small.......In the line in front of us was a man that turned around and said.."Americans?"  and then said  "God bless Americans ...We love them....  we love you "  he was so full of excitement and energy..everyone was laughing !!  we told him  "we love Kosovoans !!!!"

                                 BRANCH PROGRAM

This is the program from our branch last week..the Elders do a great job!!!  They do everything !!!

Grocery store under a mosque: Maxi market

Very close to us..( a new discovery). Amazing what we find around these tall buildings !!
This must be the one we hear the most..with its speakers on the tower!!!! Just  the next block over.

Greek Orthodox church (Christian) in center of Pristine. Never finished..  and cannot be used with out permission of the Serbian Government !!

It just disappeared !!

It was right here on the end of Mother Teresa Blvd....guess they are building a new plaza.
This is on our street..they are starting a new apartment complex.

When the big trucks come to haul the dirt out it closes off our road completely, but..nothing stops the walkers !!!!!

Taken from of our kitchen window.

Seems they are doing construction EVERYWHERE !!  Wondering who is paying for it, NATO ??

Mother( Nene) Teresa Church

At the top of Mother Teresa Blvd...it is just being built..they project finish date 2015.  On the inside, they hoist brick up in a 5 gallon bucket a few at a time.

P-day with the elders.

P-Day   with the Elders. We went up to Germia Park (where this land of KOSOVO was dedicated).....it is high in the mtns.  Great view  of all around. We had a picnic. (Better pix of view on older post.)  Nothing is too green here.

Exploring for a good baptism  place.
This is Batlava Lake  about 30 minutes north of Pristine.

Village on Batlava Lake.

                                                        Greek  Orthodox Christian church.

  LEARNING ALBANIAN

So, I bought a couple of children's books to help me learn Albanian..I am sure they are for Albanians to learn English.

This is Herclules. The only one that had English and Albanian on the same page.

So, we kept seeing all this wood being cut and hauled around. So we asked what it was for...AND, of course, they couldn't understand us and we hadn't prepared out Albanian well enough. We think it is for the bakeries to do their baking !!!

Way too much smoking in this country.. sold everywhere, on every corner, tons in the Bazaar (treg/market) and by young children peddling them everywhere..their favorite President died young from lung cancer from chain smoking !!!!!  The only 'no smoking' signs we have seen are in a chinese restaurant...pretty good food too !!!
Sam fits right in wouldn't you say ???

Home from the market...

So many fresh fruits and veggies!  Can you imagine all at one time...(season)...apricots, peaches, nectarines, pears, plums, grapes, bananas, grapes, apples...not sure where they all come from.....
water melon,  peppers and canteloup type stuff ..melony.

Erjon and Arbresta

 Wonderful People!!

The only family in our branch and the only Priesthood in our Branch.  They invited us to their home...12th floor or so  in an apartment complex. Everyone lives in apartments! They both have good jobs.

Erjon & Arbresta Tili  with their 21/2 yrs. old daughter, Elea.
Arbresta was just baptized in Feb. or so.

                                             Homes in Pristine

We went with the Elders last night to teach the little family with the two children...they are just shining !! We gave a children's book of Mormon stories to the kids ..it was in Albanian..they  were very excited.  The lesson was on the Plan of Salvation. The elders asked if they would like to be baptized, and then a discussion about the father already being baptized. He is catholic. He pulled out a beautiful book about Mother Teresa...and we told him how much we liked her. The father gave a very good prayer. The mother is moslum..not sure how interested she is...but very cordial. It was all in Albanian...we added a little  in English, of course..... they invited us back...we'll see.

So many wonderful families here  walking together on the blvd......  So fun to see friends meet up...kiss each other on the cheeks..both men and women...and so much hand -in- hand  as they walk down the streets....everyone so friendly !!!

I don't feel out-of-place  wearing a skirt...AS  everyone does......most women wear skirts and dresses old,  middle age...and especially the young...'..low and short'  and  'high and long'  all kinds . Darla would love it....dress or skirt every single day !!!!
However.....our most active member, Valmire,  never  a skirt or dress.....usually skinny jeans  to Sacrament meeting...She gave an awesome talk last week....she decided to give it in English..she was so nervious   she did great....the iron rod !!!

We received a call from Germany today wondering where our Branch reports are   and the financial statements !!!!!!    Any Ideas ??????

Look what's parked at our favorite bakery!!

One of the poorest countries in Europe (Albania first for poverty) !! pretty spiffy cars.....
There is a bakery like this on almost every block....today we bought  1large loaf of bread, 4 bread sticks, and an apple filled pastry...$.80 cents/E  total !!!

District Meeting...adventures in Macedonia

We had a great  district meeting on Wednesday. The elders from Macedonia, who are the district leaders came up on a bus, as the couple humanitarian missionaries  who drive them, had to fly to Chicago, where there is an embassy to do paper work to establish temporary residency. (A two day trip!!!).
These Elders are so amazing...such strength and testimony to be alone most of the time and not be able to proselyte!!!  We drove them back to Skopje as their trip on the bus was long and hard.
The district Leader, Elder Adams, is from Canada, BC, he has duel citizenship, so he can stay in the country of Macedonia for 90 days on his American passport and then he switches to his Canadian passport for 90 days then back again. The other elders get transferred around after 90 days.
Elder Adams was called to the Croatia/Slovenia mission and learned Croatian in the MTC. After a week in Croatia they transferred him to Serbia..where he learned Serbian.  He was there for about 7 months and said pretty much got yelled at everyday for being an American...( The Americans were helping Kosovo during the war and did much bombing to Serbia.)  When they divided the mission this last February, to the Adriatic North and Adriatic South Mission, they asked him to switch to the Adriatic South  and serve in Macedonia, because he knew languages so well. ....they speak Macedonian there. Albanian is spoken in Albania and Kosovo, only a very small number in Macedonia and Montenegro speak Albanian.
This Elder seems to be a genius in languages..he is amazing.....he has been incredible with the government officials and Embassies in Macedonia as they are still striving to get proselyting rights.
The drive there and back was very beautiful; mountains, tunnels etc....the city of Skopje is about 600,000 and had an earth quake in 1969 and was leveled  so when they rebuilt it  they built wide roads and the city is very modern and beautiful.  It is the  most modern of all the countries in our mission. The borders are harder to cross....we had to show our passports and all the car info, insurance  etc at the border going out of Kosovo and going into Macedonia and the same on our way back.
We did get lost for 40 minutes trying to find our way to the border, after we dropped the elders off.  When we got back. to Prishtina,.just in time for Institute, our  Elders had a wager that we got lost.....pretty funny!!  ( There were no signs in Albanian or English and ...we had 2 maps!!!!! ) It is about a 2 hour trip one way to Skopje, Macedonia.
We are taking our Elders to  Skopje next week for District meeting..they are excited about that  They pretty much don't get out of this city unless we drive them.
Interesting....when we first entered the country of Macedonia  we received messages on our cell phones welcoming us to the country.  We do not call country to country it is WAY expensive !!!  The Elders told us that to Park in Skopje..you just turn into a parking place text in your license plate number and they charge your cell phone for parking !!!

WALKING IN PRISHTINA

So fun !! !  For the most part, the cars park on the sidewalks and edges of the streets...so we walk along with the cars..trying to dodge around them....
(of course this does not include the 2- 4 lane busy streets).
There is a lot of cooperation between car and pedestrian..everyone just gets along..

Everyone walks....and when we cross a busy street,  you just kind of step out into the road and hope the cars will stop..most of the time they do !!! (not like running for your life like in Peru) !!
